Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba (often referred to by his title 'O Sensei' or 'Great Teacher'), pictured above. It focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. It is not a static art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement.
This year the DU Aikido Club celebrates its 35th anniversary as a recognised club. It was started in 1973, recognised in 1974, and has continued successfully ever since. We are affiliated to the Irish Aikido Federation (Ir.A.F.), which oversees the quality and technical level of teaching, as well as conducting gradings and holding special weekend courses. Our chief instructor is Mr. John Rogers (6th Dan), Shidoin and Chief Instructor of the Ir.A.F., and also former captain of the Club.
